So, what happened to the sailor?

To be able to better understand current events, and really get a grasp of this whole bipartisan thing going on, I spent a good amount of last night reading Ronald Reagan's White House diary. (So interesting- that guy really never took a day off! Why? Because he liked his job, THAT'S why!)

Check out October 25 of 1985. On that day, a Russian sailor jumped his ship and swam ashore to New Orleans. Reagan writes; "Through some bungle by our immigration people he wound up back on the ship. We are now working to get him back although now he has evidently been intimidated to where he's saying he wants to return to the Soviet U." For the entire weekend, Reagan fought to get this guy back off his Soviet ship and back to US soil. By Sunday, Reagan issues orders that "we take him off the ship by force if necessary so that he can be questioned away from the Soviets as to what he wants to do." On Tuesday, Oct 29, the story has an end.

This was twenty five years ago.

What happened to the sailor? Where is he now? Is he in the States? Dead? Alive? Such a curious story, and what a wild documentary that would make!

  1. This is very cool! So there's no other mention of it beyond that? Shame, really. Somebody really ought to find out.
