This is a Luna Moth, (Actias Luna). Depending on where you are in North America, you may see only one generation per year during the warmer months, or you might see three if your local climate is temperate. Their lifespan as a full-on procreating adult moth is one week.
The reason why you haven't ever seen one in person is because they are nocturnal, and male and female moths mate at night, for about four hours. Adult Luna Moths have no mouth - it doesn't need to eat, so it spends all of its waking time flying around and fucking.
Let this be a lesson to you from the world of nature. Life is short. Get out into the balmy summer night and make the most of it!
